Dimensions of communication competence
When we think about communication, a simple meaning comes to our mind and that is an exchange of information/ideas between individuals. With a span of time the dimensions of communication have changed drastically. In this article, we will try to unfold the different dimensions of communication and also communication competence.
Meaning of communication competence
Communication competence refers to the knowledge of effective and appropriate communication patterns and the ability to use and adapt that knowledge in various contexts (Cooley & Roach, 1984). Let us understand the different dimensions of communication- basically, two different dimensions are there, Verbal and Written.
In today’s era, having strong communication skills aids in all aspects of life – from professional life to personal life and everything that falls in between. From a business standpoint, all transactions result from communication. Good communication skills are essential to allow others and yourself to understand information more accurately and quickly. In contrast, poor communication skills lead to frequent misunderstanding and frustration. In a 2016 LinkedIn survey conducted in the United States, communication topped the list of the most sought-after soft skills among employers.
Knowing the dimensions of competence is an important first step toward developing competence. Competence obviously involves verbal and nonverbal elements, but it also applies to many situations and contexts. Communication competence is needed in order to understand communication ethics; to develop cultural awareness, to use computer-mediated communication, and to think critically. Competence involves knowledge, motivation, and skills. It’s not enough to know what good communication consists of; you must also have the motivation to reflect on and better your communication and the skills needed to do so.
