Unlike traditional learning where students are grouped according to age, taught identically and examined uniformly focusing on the process of “one size fits all” approach, personalized learning is the modern educational framework that aims to customize learning according to the needs, skills, characteristics, strengths and interests of a 21st-century learner. It may also be called student-centric learning. Personalised learning concentrates on understanding the needs and goals of individual students and then modifies instruction to address those needs and goals. In this process, each student gets a proper learning plan which is based on what they know, what they need, how they learn best and their skills and interests which can help these students learn independently and work at their own pace. Personalized learning, when properly supported by teachers, allows students to master things more easily thus increasing the chances of each student having the knowledge, skills at its best.
In personalised learning, students work with their teachers to set both short term and long-term goals. The responsibility for learning is shared by both students and teachers. This process helps students take ownership of their own learning process; they feel empowered, supported in taking risks, and feels responsible to themselves. It also give students the chance to build self-advocacy skills. The teachers make sure that the learning plans matches the academic standards and checks to see whether the
students are learning the expected skills as they progress through their education. Personalized learning is not a replacement of special education for special children but
an approach to general education that can work with an Individualized Education Program (IEP). They learn how to agree and disagree respectfully, share their opinions and listen to others opinions; reflect on their interactions with one another, etc. These skills effectively transform the old school learning approach into a modern learning environment. The essential parts of personalized learning must have accommodations, supports and accessible learning strategies. All students will be more engaged in learning and the struggling learners will get more help if done as planned.
There are four important elements of personalised learning which are:
- student ownership of learning
- formal and informal assessment data
- developing learner profiles and learning pathways and
- utilizing flexible learning environments
